JAKARTA - Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet) encourages the cooperation of oil and gas between Indonesia and Russia to be strengthened. According to Bamsoet, this cooperation is important to maintain national energy resilience in the midst of rising energy needs and uncertain global geopolitical situation.
Bamsoet conveyed this when receiving the Chairman of the Russia-Indonesia Business Council Mikhail Kuritsyn in Jakarta, Monday, June 8, 2026.
"The oil and gas cooperation between Indonesia and Russia must be placed as a strategic partnership that is mutually beneficial," said Bamsoet.
He said Indonesia needs investment, technology, and sustainable energy supply. On the other hand, Russia has long experience as one of the world's major energy producers.
According to Bamsoet, the cooperation could include crude oil supply, refinery development, energy storage facility construction, to investments in the upstream and downstream oil and gas sectors.
He assessed that the energy issue can no longer be read as a trade issue. In a global situation that is easy to heat, countries with many supply sources will be more free to maintain economic stability.
Bamsoet said Indonesia's energy needs continue to increase in line with industrial and economic growth. Indonesia is also still facing a deficit in oil so that energy imports remain a strategic need.
"Diversifying energy sources is a need that cannot be delayed," he said.
According to Bamsoet, cooperation with Russia can be carried out through an intergovernmental or government-to-government scheme, as well as between business actors or business-to-business. In this way, Indonesia can have a more diverse choice of energy sources and not be too dependent on certain markets.
Bamsoet added that modern oil and gas cooperation does not stop at the sale of crude oil. Indonesia needs to pursue wider benefits, including technology transfer, research, human resource development, and energy infrastructure development.
"What we are pursuing is not only energy supply, but also technology transfer, improvement of national human capital capacity, and investments that can strengthen the competitiveness of the Indonesian energy industry in the long term," said Bamsoet.
He assessed that Russian energy companies have experience in exploration, production, processing, and distribution of energy. Therefore, the cooperation opportunities need to be directed to add value to the national energy industry, not just to cover short-term needs.
