JAKARTA - Ireland has imposed a ban on visiting the country for Israeli right-wing ministers, Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

Irish Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan approved the suspension, as confirmed by Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin while attending the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tivat, Montenegro.

Martin said the actions and statements of the two officials "are tantamount to a desire to see the elimination of Palestinians from Palestine", adding that further action at the EU level was needed.

He emphasized that the international community must consider this issue.

He said Ireland would raise the issue with other EU members, noting their actions justified sanctions across the EU, although getting a consensus within the bloc was still uncertain.

A spokesman for the justice minister said the ban was imposed after an agreement by the government outside the Cabinet, in line with Ireland's policy to prevent the entry of individuals who are considered to have contributed to the crisis that is still ongoing in Gaza.

The decision also follows similar steps by a number of countries, including France, which had previously announced restrictions on the entry of Israeli officials amid a growing international call for EU sanctions.
