Jember Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake, Residents Feel Shock

JAKARTA - A magnitude 5.1 earthquake that shook Jember Regency, East Java (Jatim), and was not tsunami-potential.

"The tectonic earthquake occurred at 15.39 WIB, Tuesday, May 26, in the southeast of Jember, East Java," said the Head of the Malang Geophysics Station, Ricko Kardoso, in a press release received in Jember.

According to him, the results of the BMKG analysis showed that the earthquake had an update parameter with a magnitude of M4.8 with the epicenter of the earthquake located at the coordinates of 9.07 degrees South Latitude (LS) and 113.82 degrees East Longitude (BT), or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 99 kilometers southeast, Jember, at a depth of 14 km.

"By considering the epicenter location and hypocenter depth, the earthquake that occurred is a shallow earthquake type due to the presence of deformation activity in the plate," said Ricko as quoted by ANTARA.

He explained that the results of the source mechanism analysis showed that the earthquake had a shear movement mechanism.

"The earthquake had an impact and was felt in the Jember area with an intensity scale of IV MMI, Banyuwangi with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, Bondowoso, Kuta, South Kuta and Malang with an intensity scale of III MMI," he said.

Then the Denpasar area with the intensity scale II-III MMI, while the Blitar and Trenggalek areas with the intensity scale II MMI.

"The results of the modeling show that the earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami," he said.

Until 15.55 WIB, he continued, the results of BMKG monitoring had not shown any subsequent earthquake activity.

Meanwhile, the number of residents in the Graha Citra Mas Housing had scattered out of their houses because the earthquake was quite strong.

"The vibration was quite loud, so I ran outside the house," said Fitri, one of the residents of the housing.
