JAKARTA - The Deputy Permanent Representative of the US to the UN, Tammy Bruce, urged Russia and Ukraine to immediately end the fighting that led to deaths and destruction after Ukraine's deadly attack on a student dormitory in Luhansk.
"We followed reports of deaths and injuries in Luhansk last night. These deaths and destruction must be stopped right now," Bruce said at an emergency session on the Ukraine conflict at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, May 23.
Bruce reiterated that the United States is calling on Russia and Ukraine to end a war that has claimed millions of victims.
"We urge you (Russia and Ukraine) to negotiate in good faith to end this violence, for your obligation to protect and safeguard the lives of your citizens," Bruce said.
Previously, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenziamenyebutkan more than 40 people were injured and at least six people were killed after a Ukrainian drone attacked an academic building and dormitory in Starobilsk.
In 2014, Luhansk, bordering Russia to the east and north, declared itself a republic and seceded from Ukraine.
Internationally, Luhansk is part of Ukraine's sovereign territory. However, de facto, the region is under the control of Russian occupation forces.
