JAKARTA - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will speak about the importance of the United Nations (UN) in New York at a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) during China's presidency of the rotating presidency of the UNSC.

"As the rotating president of the UN Security Council for May, China will hold a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council on May 26," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun at a press conference in Beijing, reported by ANTARA, Saturday, May 23.

"Foreign Minister Wang Yi will lead a meeting in New York with the theme of the meeting 'Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System'," Guo Jiakun added.

The UN Security Council has five permanent members with veto rights, namely the United States (US), China, Russia, Britain, and France. Meanwhile, the 10 non-permanent members of the UN Security Council are elected for a two-year term, in the UN General Assembly.

Every month, both permanent and non-permanent member states, hold the presidency of the UN Security Council in alphabetical order and as of May 1, 2026, China will be the rotating president of the UN Security Council.

"As the rotating chairman of the UN Security Council in May, China proposed holding a high-level meeting at the Security Council. This meeting will focus on issues of great importance to the international community, including the current relevance of the UN Charter, observing and practicing the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and improving the authority and effectiveness of the UN and the Security Council," said Guo Jiakun.

The meeting, said Guo Jiakun, will be led by Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and open to all UN member states.

"Foreign ministers and high-level representatives from various countries have confirmed their attendance, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres will deliver a speech at the event," Guo Jiakun added.

Guo Jiakun said the world today is witnessing unprecedented rapid transformation in the past century, interrelated reforms and upheavals, and endless wars and conflicts.

"The international system with the UN at its core is facing unprecedented blows and challenges. We hope that through this meeting, the parties will renew the good goals set forth in the UN Charter," said Guo Jiakun.

He also said that Foreign Minister Wang Yi would invite members of the UN Security Council to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to multilateralism and invite members to increase their responsibilities in reviving the status and role of the UN and gather greater synergy to reform and improve global governance.

"When unilateralism and hegemonism reappear, they deal a heavy blow to the international system with the UN at its core and the international order based on international law, the world risks a regression to the law of the jungle," said Guo Jiakun.

Uphold the authority of the UN and international equality.

In the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Guo Jiakun said, the two leaders also agreed that as permanent members of the UN Security Council and responsible major countries, China and Russia should increase their obligations and jointly safeguard the authority of the UN as well as international justice and equality.

"China and Russia will deepen strategic coordination in building a multipolar world and improving global governance, deliver a strong call in line with the current situation, and become a source of stability and strength for world peace and development," Guo Jiakun added.

In addition to attending the UN Security Council meeting, Wang Yi is also scheduled to attend a meeting of the "Global Governance Friends Group" in New York on May 28, and will hold meetings with the UN Secretary-General and foreign ministers from other countries.

"In December last year, the Global Governance Friends Group was inaugurated in New York, Geneva and Vienna with an increasing number of members, influence and cohesion. This fully shows that the Global Governance Initiative initiated by President Xi Jinping is at the forefront and meets the needs of all countries. This is where the course of history turns and the trend of public opinion is formed," said Guo Jiakun.

He said China hopes all parties will use the upcoming "Friends Group" meeting as an opportunity to build consensus on reform, strengthen coordination and cooperation, find effective solutions to global challenges, jointly safeguard the authority and status of the UN and promote a more just and equitable global governance system.

The permanent members of the UN Security Council are China, France, Russia, the UK and the US, while the non-permanent members of the UN Security Council in 2026 are Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Liberia, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia.

The UN Security Council has 15 member states, and each member has one vote responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

The council plays a key role in determining the existence of a threat to peace or an act of aggression and, under certain conditions, the UNSC can also impose sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.

A total of 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council or the so-called P5 are countries with veto rights so that the UN Security Council resolution or decision cannot be passed.
