JAKARTA - The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to the White House's statement that a number of agreements were the result of a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump.
"During President Trump's visit to China, the two presidents had in-depth discussions on China-US economic and trade relations, showed the direction and provided protection for economic and trade cooperation between the two countries," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press conference in Beijing, Wednesday, May 20.
He said this while answering a reporter's question about the White House's statement that China had agreed to buy US agricultural products worth US$17 billion every year until 2028, excluding soybeans.
"Guided by the common understanding of the two presidents, China and the US will immediately lock in negotiations and work together to ensure implementation, provide more certainty and stability for bilateral economic and trade cooperation and the world economy," added Guo Jiakun.
The White House has previously issued a "Fact Sheet" saying President Donald Trump secured a historic deal with China, providing benefits for American workers, farmers, and industries.
The document states that the US and China will establish two new institutions to optimize bilateral economic relations, namely the US-China Trade Agency to manage bilateral trade in all non-sensitive goods and the US-China Investment Agency as an intergovernmental forum to discuss investment-related issues.
China is also said to respond to US concerns about supply shortages related to rare earth metals and other important minerals, including yttrium, scandium, neodymium, and indium.
China will also respond to US concerns about restrictions on the sale of equipment and technology for the production and processing of rare earth metals.
Then China agreed to the initial purchase of 200 US-made Boeing aircraft for Chinese airlines.
China will also buy at least 17 billion per year of U.S. agricultural products in the period 2026-2028, in addition to the soybean purchase commitment made in October 2025.
China will restore market access for U.S. beef by updating the list of more than 400 U.S. beef facilities and adding new lists and lifting all suspensions of U.S. beef facilities.
China also continued to import poultry from US states that were declared free of bird flu.
Regarding international issues, Trump and Xi are said to have agreed that Iran should not have nuclear weapons, calling for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and agreeing that no country or organization is allowed to collect toll fees.
President Trump and President Xi also reaffirmed their shared goal of denuclearizing North Korea.
"China has clearly stated its consistent position on the Iranian issue, the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, and other issues, and asked the US to seriously respond to the reasonable concerns of the parties concerned and stick to dialogue and negotiations for peaceful settlement of the issue," Guo Jiakun added.
The economic and trade teams of the two countries, said Guo Jiakun, held talks in the spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, and produced results that could stabilize China-US economic and trade relations and properly address each other's concerns.
"China is ready to work with the US to fully and accurately implement the common understanding reached by the two presidents, improve dialogue, expand cooperation, properly handle differences and sensitive issues, add a new dimension to the vision of building a constructive and strategically stable China-US relationship, and promote the development of a stable, healthy, and sustainable China-US relationship," said Guo Jiakun.
Regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Guo Jiakung emphasized that China's attitude remained consistent.
"China has played a constructive role in its own way in advancing the political settlement of the issue. We are committed to encouraging the parties concerned to address the root causes and core issues of the Korean Peninsula and make constructive efforts to ease tensions," Guo Jiakun added.
On the issue of artificial intelligence (AI), Guo Jiakun said both China and the US need to work together to promote the development and improve the governance of AI to ensure that AI will contribute more to social progress and the common well-being of the international community.
"During President Trump's visit to China, the two heads of state had a constructive exchange on AI and agreed to launch an intergovernmental dialogue on AI," said Guo Jiakun.
