SURABAYA - Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) Brian Yuliarto encourages universities to direct research and innovation according to regional needs.

"The important thing to note is that the results of research and innovation need to be adjusted to the needs of each region, so that what the campus researches and develops can be used by the local government and local communities," said Mendiktisaintek Brian Yuliartos when attending the "Morning Talk" agenda in Surabaya, East Java, Saturday, May 9, reported by ANTARA.

The Minister of Education and Technology discussed a number of strategic issues in higher education, ranging from education equity, strengthening research, to the development of Private Universities (PTS).

According to him, the challenge of education equality in Indonesia is still closely related to the economic conditions of the community. Meanwhile, regarding research, he emphasized that the national research budget has not decreased.

"Research funds actually did not decrease. The list increased three to four times and there was a 25 percent honor. So the number did not decrease, it actually increased. However, the competition became more intense," said Mendiktisaintek Brian.

He also touched on the policy of accepting new students at State Universities (PTN) which is limited to a maximum of July 30, so that PTS has the opportunity to open registration for a longer period until September or early October.

In addition, the Minister of Education and Technology, Brian, emphasized the importance of independent waste management in the campus environment.

After the morning discussion agenda, the Rector of the University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya (Umsura) Prof Mundakir together with the campus leadership invited the Minister of Education and Technology Brian to tour various innovations produced by lecturers and students under the auspices of the Center for Impactful Innovation (CII).

Dozens of innovative products that have obtained Intellectual Property Rights (HAKI) are exhibited, ranging from education, health, economy, engineering, to other appropriate technologies.

Umsura Rector Prof Mundakir welcomed the government's policy regarding the strengthening of PTS through curriculum strengthening, digital transformation, and support for research and innovation.

"I think this is part of the realization of the Impact Campus. We support this program by directing campus research on the benefits in the surrounding environment," he said.

He gave an example of Umsura's cooperation with the Surabaya City Government (Pemkot) in the use of solar panels for water pumps as a form of campus contribution to the community.

In addition, Umsura continues to develop new study programs that are adaptive to community needs and industry developments.

"We got three to four gas stations for the initial phase yesterday. After this system runs optimally, we will reapply for further development proposals," he said.
