JAKARTA - The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vowed to disband the militant group Hezbollah and was ready to launch a new attack on Iran if necessary, while visiting his troops in southern Lebanon Wednesday.

"We will take every opportunity to deepen our efforts to dissolve Hezbollah and continue to weaken it," Lieutenant General Zamir told soldiers in the Khiam City region, Lebanon, launching Al Arabiya from AFP (7/5).

He added that the military was also "on a high state of alert to return to a robust and extensive operation that will allow us to deepen our achievements and further weaken the Iranian regime."

Separately, a senior commander of Hezbollah's elite Radwan forces was killed in an Israeli attack on the southern outskirts of Beirut on Wednesday night, a source close to the group said.

The attack is the first in the area in nearly a month.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his military had targeted "Radwan Hezbollah forces commanders."

Meanwhile, a source close to Hezbollah told AFP on condition of anonymity, "Malek Ballout, the operations commander in the Radwan forces" had been killed.

The government-run Lebanese National News Agency reported that "Israeli warplanes launched an attack, targeting Ghobeiri" in the southern outskirts, Hezbollah's stronghold.

Beirut and its southern suburbs have been spared Israeli attacks since April 8, when a massive Israeli offensive across the country killed more than 350 people.

Wednesday's attack came as US President Donald Trump said there was a "very good chance" of reaching a peace deal with Iran.

Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into the Middle East war on March 2 by attacking Israel in support of its ally, Iran.

Israeli attacks on Lebanon since then have killed more than 2,700 people and displaced more than a million, mainly from southern and eastern Lebanon and the southern outskirts of Beirut.

Although the ceasefire came into effect on April 17, Israel has repeatedly bombed Lebanon, especially in the south, and Hezbollah has responded by launching attacks on Israeli forces.
