JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) DKI Jakarta has recorded that the structure of the Jakarta population is increasingly dominated by the younger generation. The results of the Inter-Census Population Survey (SUPAS) 2025 show that the millennial generation and Gen Z are the largest group and control almost half of the capital's population.
The number of residents in Jakarta was recorded at 10.72 million. This figure continues to increase compared to the previous two censuses, although the growth rate has begun to slow down.
"The number of residents of Jakarta based on the results of the Intercensal Population Survey (SUPAS 2025) is 10,724.33 thousand people," said the Head of BPS DKI Jakarta Kadarmanto in a release, Wednesday, May 6.
Jakarta's population growth in the last five years has been lower than the previous decade. The population growth rate was only 0.32 percent in the 2020-2025 period, down from 0.92 percent in 2010-2020.
Based on year of birth, the population is grouped into the Pre-Boomer Generation (born before 1945), Baby Boomer (born in 1946-1964), Generation X (born in 1965-1980) Millennials (born in 1981-1996), Generation Z (born in 1997-2012) and Post Generation Z (born in 2013 and onwards).
BPS noted that the composition of generations showed the dominance of the productive age group. The millennial generation was the largest with a share of 24.82 percent, followed by Generation Z at 24.12 percent.
"These two generations together cover almost half of the population in Jakarta, which shows the strong dominance of the productive age population in the current structure," said Kadarmanto.
Meanwhile, the other four generations contributed 51.06 percent, consisting of Generation X at 21.85 percent, Post Generation Z at 17.78 percent, Baby Boomer Generation at 10.72 percent, and Pre-Boomer at 0.71 percent.
If viewed from the age structure, the productive age population (15-64 years) still dominates with a share of 71.26 percent. However, this proportion is beginning to show a decline compared to the previous period. On the other hand, the trend of population aging is beginning to be seen. The number of elderly people continues to increase in the last decade.
"This indicates that the structure of Jakarta's population age is gradually moving towards the process of population aging (ageing population)," said Kadarmanto.
However, Jakarta is still in the demographic bonus phase. This is seen from the dependency ratio which is still below the threshold of 50.
"The results of SUPAS 2025 show a dependency ratio in Jakarta of 40.34," wrote BPS.
This means that every 100 productive age residents bear around 40 non-productive age residents. This figure has indeed increased compared to the previous census, but it has not shifted Jakarta's position from the demographic bonus phase.
Based on the results of SUPAS 2025, the number of male residents in Jakarta is 5,371.39 thousand or 50.09 percent of the total population, while the number of female residents is 5,352.94 thousand or 49.91 percent of the total population.
"Based on the composition of gender, the gender ratio in Jakarta is recorded at 100, which means there are about 100 men for every 100 women in Jakarta," he said.
