JAKARTA - A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday at Shinjuku Gyoen National Park, Tokyo, for the reconstruction of the former imperial resting house that burned in a 1945 air raid.

Shinjuku Gyoen is now managed by the Ministry of the Environment.

The Ministry of Environment aims to recreate the exterior and interior of Nihonkan Goten by referring to photographs that have been collected and historical records as well as similar imperial facilities. The project is targeted to be completed by the end of March 2028.

"I hope this facility will preserve tradition while offering a sense of tranquility," said Shigeharu Aoyama, Senior Deputy Minister of the Ministry of the Environment, at the groundbreaking, as reported by Kyodo News (1/5).

This one-story wooden structure, which was originally converted from a former samurai residence by the Imperial Household Ministry after Shinjuku Gyoen became an imperial garden in the Meiji Era (1868-1912), was used by members of the imperial family to rest and eat during visits.

The reconstructed building will cover about 510 square meters, with modern earthquake-resistant and fire-resistant technology integrated while reproducing its appearance around 1921.
