Denpasar - The Denpasar City Police and the South Kuta Police are investigating the cause of the fire that hit the Agung Restaurant building in the area of the Club Med Hotel, Nusa Dua tourism area, South Kuta, Badung Regency, Friday morning.
South Kuta Police Chief AKP Muhammad Bhayangkara Putra Sejati said his party had taken initial steps to handle the case, ranging from receiving reports, visiting the crime scene (TKP), to collecting witness statements.
"The investigation is still ongoing to find out the exact cause of the fire," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, April 24.
He explained that the report of the incident was received at around 07.40 WITA. Meanwhile, the fire is suspected to have started at around 06.50 WITA when breakfast preparation activities took place in the kitchen area.
Based on the testimony of witness Komang Adi Sugita as a security officer, the incident was first known after the fire alarm was monitored from the monitoring post.
When checked with the guard team, the fire had grown and engulfed the kitchen and restaurant areas.
The hotel then contacted the receptionist to forward the report to the fire department. Not long after, the ITDC fire team arrived at the location and immediately carried out the extinguishing effort.
Similar testimony was given by a number of other witnesses, including the Supervisor of the Imam Hambali Restaurant and the kitchen staff. They said the fire was allegedly caused by a deep fryer due to too much hot oil.
Initial extinguishing efforts using a light fire extinguisher (APAR) were carried out, but the fire quickly grew to reach the ceiling of the building, which was partly made of wood and had a syrup roof.
A total of eight fire trucks were deployed to the location, consisting of six units from the Badung Fire Department and two units from ITDC.
The fire burned a two-story building with an area of approximately 5,000 square meters.
The affected areas include Agung Restaurant on the second floor as well as a number of facilities on the first floor such as boutiques, photoshop booths, meeting rooms, and accounting offices.
There were no casualties in the incident, but the material losses are estimated to be more than IDR 5 billion.
Until now, the situation at the location has been declared safe and conducive after the fire was successfully extinguished.
