JAKARTA - The South West Papua Regional Police (Polda PBD) is hunting down seven people on the wanted list (DPO) related to the alleged premeditated murder of two members of the Marines in Maybrat Regency.
Acting Head of Public Relations of the West Papua Barat Daya Police, Kompol Jenny Hengkelare said the case was a premeditated murder and confiscation of firearms against members of the Gobang VII Yon 9 Marine Task Force at the Tinjau Post in Kampung Sorry, South Aifat District on Sunday (22/3) at around 07.00 WIT.
"At that time, the five members of the task force were moving from the Command Post to the Observation Post, which was about 150 meters away. When two soldiers were about 30 meters from the post, suddenly there was a gunshot from the top of the Observation Post," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, April 23.
The shooting, he said, immediately hit two soldiers, followed by a series of follow-up shots. Three other members had resisted before retreating to seek protection.
"As a result of the incident, two soldiers were reported dead, while another was shot in the hand. In addition to the casualties, the perpetrator also seized two firearms belonging to the victim," he said.
He said based on the results of the visum from Sorong RSAL, two victims were declared dead, while one victim suffered serious injuries.
During the investigation process, the police have examined eight witnesses, including from the TNI, the community, and forensic experts.
"The witness's testimony states that the perpetrator seen in the photos and videos circulating on social media is the same person as the one at the scene of the incident," he said.
Meanwhile, he said, the results of digital forensic analysis of video evidence confirmed that the recording was authentic and had not been manipulated, so it was considered valid for the purposes of investigation.
His party has also seized a number of evidence, including two body vests, two combat helmets, a flash disk containing shooting videos, a machete, and a hat.
"Based on the results of the investigation and the title of the case on April 15, 2026, the investigators named seven suspects who are now DPO status, namely MF, ZA, DA, AF, MF, YKY, and MF," he said.
The suspects were charged with Article 459 of the Criminal Code regarding premeditated murder, sub-article 458 of the Criminal Code regarding murder, and Article 479 paragraph (4) of the Criminal Code regarding violence resulting in death.
"They are threatened with the death penalty or life imprisonment," he said.
He emphasized that his party would continue to pursue the perpetrators to hold them accountable for their actions in accordance with applicable laws.
