JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Culture Service has clarified Governor Pramono Anung's policy regarding the prohibition of ondel-ondel for street hawking. The ban was emphasized not to target all artistic activities, but rather practices that were considered to deviate from the norm and tend to lead to begging activities.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Culture Service, Mochamad Miftahulloh Tamary, explained that the use of ondel-ondel that does not comply with the rules can be categorized as a violation of public order.

"Ondel-ondel used for begging but not in accordance with the pattern can be categorized as begging and can be subject to Regulation 8 of 2007 concerning Public Order," Miftah told reporters, Monday, April 13.

Regarding enforcement of the rules, Tamary said the mechanism had been regulated through related regional devices, including Satpol PP as the spearhead in the field.

He emphasized that the policy aims to restore the function of ondel-ondel as part of the Betawi cultural identity, not just a tool for making money on the street.

"The main goal is certainly more to the effort to use ondel-ondel that is appropriate as part of the effort to preserve Betawi culture," he explained.

However, the approach to coaching is still prioritized. The Culture Service continues to communicate with communities and art actors to maintain the continuity of traditions without violating rules.

On the other hand, the Culture Service noted that the ecosystem of ondel-ondel art actors in Jakarta is still quite active. Currently, there are 30 craftsmen and studios spread across various regions.

"The Culture Service continues to actively socialize about preserving Betawi Culture and encourages the community to jointly guard against the misuse of Ondel-ondel outside its framework," said Miftah.

Previously, the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung emphasized that the practice of ondel-ondel was prohibited for use as a means of street entertainment. The ban was taken because the government wanted to restore the function of ondel-ondel as a Betawi cultural icon that was displayed properly, not as a means of making money on the street.

"Regarding ondel-ondel, we have made a decision to ban ondel-ondel on the streets," said Pramono at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, Saturday, April 11.

According to him, ondel-ondel has symbolic value as a representation of Betawi culture and Jakarta identity which needs to be maintained its honor. In line with this, the DKI Provincial Government is also preparing a concept of ondel-ondel performances that are more directed and managed, especially ahead of the 500th anniversary of Jakarta.

"Of course we will provide education for the ondel-ondel street performers," he said.

On the other hand, he also asked the Satuan Polisi Pamong Praja (Satpol PP) to start enforcing discipline in the field. Although the sanctions have not been implemented, the ban is ensured to continue.

"In places like that, I ask for the time when the satpol pp prohibits it. Regarding sanctions, which I think have not yet come into effect. But what is clear is that it will definitely be banned," added Pramono.
