Lebak - The Lebak Regional Police (Polres) has secured two perpetrators suspected of blasphemy with the Quran and viral on social media.
"The perpetrator is still undergoing an examination by the police," said the Head of Public Relations of the Lebak Lebak Police, Iptu Mustafadilansir, to ANTARA, Saturday, April 11.
Lebak Police asked residents to remain calm and not be provoked by the blasphemy case that disturbed the community.
He said the police would not tolerate any actions that could potentially disrupt public order, especially those related to sensitive issues such as religion.
"We moved quickly and decisively by securing the two suspected perpetrators of religious blasphemy and are now in the process of intensive examination," said Mustafa.
He explained that the incident occurred on Wednesday (8/4) in South Polotot Village, Sukaraja Village, Malingping District, Lebak Regency.
The case began with an alleged theft at a salon owned by one of the suspected perpetrators with the initials NR against MT.
Due to the lack of recognition from the MT, NR allegedly forced the victim to swear by stepping on the Quran, which was then recorded and circulated until it went viral on social media.
As a result of this act, he said, there was a strong reaction from the community which could potentially cause kamtibmas disturbances.
"Following up on the case, the Lebak Police immediately took quick steps by securing the two suspected perpetrators to prevent an escalation of the situation," he said.
Mustafa emphasized that the legal process would run professionally, transparently, and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
"We ensure that the handling of this case is carried out professionally, transparently and thoroughly," he said.
