JAKARTA - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday accused Israel of undermining all efforts to stop the war in the Middle East, saying Ankara would continue to pursue every opportunity to advance a ceasefire.
"The Israeli government continues to undermine all initiatives aimed at ending the war," President Erdogan said after a weekly cabinet meeting in the Turkish capital.
"If there is any chance at all to silence the guns and open up space for negotiations, we are making a sincere effort to seize it," he continued.
"Our hope is that this illegal, senseless, illegitimate and very harmful war for all humanity will end soon," President Erdogan said.
Furthermore, President Erdogan also said that Turkey had increased diplomatic contacts to achieve a ceasefire.
"Because the war continues, we have warned that the fire can spread to other countries. When we leave the 38th day of the conflict, unfortunately we continue to carry the same concerns for our region," he explained.
"Facing the increasing risks, I, as president, on the one hand, and our ministers on the other, accelerated our diplomatic contacts," said President Erdogan.
It is known that Turkey has been trying to mediate the end of hostilities, especially through negotiations with Pakistan and Egypt.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday met with the US Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, calling the meeting "productive."
Foreign Minister Fidan also spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart to discuss "the course of the war and other developments," a Turkish diplomatic source said.
