JAKARTA - The Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that the country's air defense shot down 389 Ukrainian drones in a Tuesday night attack reported in Russian and Crimean territory since Moscow's forces invaded Ukraine more than four years ago.

The drones were intercepted over 13 Russian regions as well as the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

The governor of the Leningrad Region north of Moscow, Alexander Drozdenko, said 56 drones were shot down there, and fires occurred at the Ust-Luga port in the Baltic Sea as a result of the Ukrainian attack, Al Arabiya reported from The Associated Press (25/3).

Ukrainian forces also carried out missile strikes on Belgorod Region on the border with Ukraine overnight, damaging energy infrastructure that caused disruptions to electricity, water and heating supplies, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

The attack underscores the growing capabilities of long-range drones being developed and produced within Ukraine.

This comes a day after Russia fired nearly 1,000 drones and 34 missiles into civilian areas of Ukraine in 24 hours, expanding their usual nighttime air raids into daytime in one of their biggest air assaults of the war.

On Tuesday, Russia fired 948 drones of various types into Ukraine. At least 6 people were killed and about 50 people were injured, Ukrainian authorities said.
