JAKARTA - Iran has threatened to retaliate against attacks on its energy infrastructure by attacking energy installations across the Middle East, potentially causing a long-term rise in oil prices.
"Immediately after our power plants and national electricity infrastructure were attacked, all vital infrastructure throughout the region, including energy and oil infrastructure, will be considered legitimate targets," Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said via social media X, Sunday.
Ghalibaf made this statement in response to US President Donald Trump's threat to destroy Iran's power plants, from the largest, if Tehran does not open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.
Ghalibaf said that a retaliatory attack, if it happened, would "destroy" the electricity infrastructure in the region and cause "oil prices to soar for a long time".
Iran has so far continued to attack US and Israeli military targets in response to the two countries' joint military operation against Iran on February 28.
On the first day of the attack, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed, while hundreds of elementary school students in southern Iran were killed after their school was hit by a missile.
According to Iranian authorities, the death toll from the US-Israeli attack on the country currently stands at 1,300 people.
