Cianjur - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Cianjur Regency, West Java, is still conducting data collection related to the impact of a magnitude 4.3 earthquake centered in Sukabumi Regency and caused panic among residents in a number of Cianjur areas, Sunday, March 15.
Cianjur BPBD Secretary Asep Sudrajat said the earthquake was felt quite strong and felt by residents in several sub-districts in Cianjur.
The earthquake was centered at coordinates 6.98 South Latitude and 106.98 East Longitude or about 8 kilometers southeast of Sukabumi City with a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.
The earthquake tremors made some residents choose to stay outside the house for several tens of minutes. In a number of crowded centers, residents were also seen gathering in the vehicle parking area to avoid the possibility of buildings collapsing.
After confirming that there was no aftershock, residents slowly returned to their homes even though they still felt uneasy. This is because in the past week, people in a number of Cianjur areas have felt several earthquake tremors centered in the Sukabumi area.
"Officers are still conducting data collection related to the impact of the earthquake in Sukabumi which was felt quite strongly in a number of sub-districts that border directly with Sukabumi Regency," said Asep Sudrajat as quoted by Antara.
He explained that the interim report said that the tremors of the earthquake in the early morning were felt quite strongly twice in Gekbrong District, Warungkondang, Cianjur, Campaka, and Takokak.
The earthquake also triggered panic among residents in a number of locations, including in the Pesona Cianjur Indah Housing, Nagrak Village, Cianjur District.
Some residents in the area are still traumatized by the massive earthquake that hit Cianjur in 2022.
"We still ask residents to be alert and not panic, immediately find a safe place when they feel the earthquake," he said.
One of the residents of the Pesona Cianjur Indah Housing, Vicky Juniar, said the earthquake felt quite strong twice so that residents immediately ran out of the house.
"It was quite strong twice, so we immediately ran out of the house and there were many other residents outside. We are still traumatized by the 2022 earthquake in which our area was quite severely affected," he said.
Similar panic also occurred in a number of crowded centers in Cianjur when residents were waiting for the time of sahur.
A cafe visitor, Faisal (20), said visitors ran to the parking area after feeling the second earthquake which was quite strong.
"The cafe building swayed quite strongly when the second earthquake felt quite strong, so the visitors ran to the parking lot because they were afraid the building would collapse like the earthquake three years ago," he said.
BPBD Cianjur until now is still monitoring the condition in a number of areas and appeals to the public to remain vigilant against the possibility of aftershocks.
