JAKARTA - China's top diplomat has communicated with Iran to Israel regarding the current situation in the Middle East, stressing that war is not a solution to solving problems.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Thursday China was "deeply concerned" about the tense situation in the region.

He said Foreign Minister Wang Yi had made phone calls with his counterparts from Russia, Iran, Oman, France, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to exchange views on the evolving regional situation.

"Foreign Minister Wang stressed that military operations must be stopped immediately and that the parties must return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible," Mao said.

He added that the escalation of a prolonged conflict is not beneficial to anyone.

"China believes that war and violence cannot solve problems forever. Dialogue and negotiation are the right solution, and the settlement of disputes and differences politically and diplomatically must be upheld," Mao said, launching Anadolu (6/3).

Mao noted that Beijing would soon send Chinese Special Envoy for the Middle East Zhai Jun to the region to actively engage with regional actors and seek to de-escalate tensions.

It is known that Israel and the United States have continued to launch massive attacks against Iran since last Saturday, killing at least 926 people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and high-ranking military officials.

Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel as well as Gulf states that host US military assets.
