BALIKPAPAN - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminds the public to be aware of the potential for heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in a number of areas of East Kalimantan from Thursday to Saturday, March 7.
The Head of the Data and Information Team of the BMKG Class I Station at Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Airport, Carolina Meylita Sibarani, said that this weather condition could potentially occur in several regencies and sub-districts in the next few days.
"Starting today until the next two days, a number of areas in East Kalimantan have the potential to experience heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds," said Carolina in Balikpapan, Antara, Thursday, March 5.
He detailed, on Thursday, heavy rain is expected to occur in East Kutai Regency, specifically in Bengalon, Rantau Pulung, Telen, and Teluk Pandan Districts.
Furthermore, on Friday, March 6, the potential for heavy rain continues in the East Kutai region, namely in the Busang, Kombeng, and Telen Districts.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, March 7, heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds are expected to spread to four districts in East Kalimantan, namely West Kutai Regency, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kutai Regency, and Mahakam Ulu Regency.
In West Kutai, extreme weather is expected to occur in Penyinggahan District. Meanwhile, in Kutai Kartanegara, it has the potential to hit the Kembang Janggut, Kenohan, Tabang, and Tenggarong Districts.
Meanwhile, in East Kutai, it is estimated that it will occur in eight sub-districts, namely Batu Ampar, Busang, Kaliorang, Kaubun, Long Mesangat, Muara Ancalong, Muara Bengkal, and Telen.
Meanwhile, in Mahakam Ulu, the potential for heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is predicted to occur in Long Bagun and Long Hubung Districts.
Carolina explained that this condition needs to be a concern because many residential areas in East Kalimantan are located around the riverbanks.
According to him, heavy rain has the potential to trigger river overflows which can cause flooding in residential areas. In addition, the topography of East Kalimantan which is hilly with steep slopes also increases the risk of landslides.
