JAKARTA - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei on Wednesday claimed that his country only attacked US military targets in the region and did so properly.

In an interview with Al Arabiya, he said: "We are only defending ourselves and not attacking neighboring countries," adding that Tehran targets sites that attack Iran, as quoted (5/3).

His remarks came despite video circulating in the Gulf appearing to show Iranian strikes hitting civilian areas.

"We extend a hand of friendship to all countries in the region," he explained, stressing that Iran's claim to have attacked Saudi Arabia was only an accusation.

Baghaei continued by saying Iran has been the target of illegal attacks by the United States and Israel.

"This war was forced on us and we did not start it," he said.

He also said Iran wants to maintain common security in the region.

Further, Baghaei explained that all Iranian institutions operate in accordance with the law, and noted that internal affairs are going well.

He also emphasized that the interim leadership council is currently managing state affairs.

Regarding negotiations with Washington, Baghaei said talks had been going well before the war, and pointed out that Washington was the party that failed them.

When asked if there were currently negotiations with Washington, the Iranian spokesman replied: "Currently we are focusing on defense."
