JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Iran's new leadership wanted to talk to him and he had agreed, according to an interview with the Atlantic magazine.

This claim comes after Iran announced the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to a US and Israeli attack. In its place, according to the Constitution, a provisional structure will lead until a new leader is elected.

"They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will talk to them. They should have done it sooner. They should have given what is very practical and easy to do sooner. They waited too long," President Trump said in an interview from his residence in Florida, launching Al Arabiya from Reuters (2/3).

However, President Trump did not mention with whom he would speak or say whether it would happen on Sunday or Monday.

President Trump said some of the people involved in recent talks with the US were no longer alive.

"Most of those people are gone. Some of the people we were dealing with are gone, because it was a big blow," he said in an interview with Atlantic staff writer Michael Scherer.

"They should have done it sooner, Michael. They could have made a deal. They should have done it sooner. They were too cautious," he continued.

Referring to Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Larijani explained that if the country does not have a Leader, the President, the Chief Justice (MA) and one of the legal experts of the Constitutional Council - who are elected by the Policy Determination Council - will temporarily carry out the duties of the Leader until the next Leader is elected, quoted from Tasnim.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the leadership council consisting of himself, the head of the judiciary, and an influential member of the Guardian Council had temporarily taken over the duties of the supreme leader after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
