JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump confirmed that the US military launched a "large-scale combat operation" in Iran, amid explosions that shook Tehran and Israel's announcement that it had previously attacked Iran.
"A moment ago, the United States military began a major combat operation in Iran. Our goal is to protect the American people by eliminating the immediate threat from the Iranian regime," Trump said in a video uploaded to his Truth Social account.
"Iran, with its threatening activities, directly endangers the United States, our troops, our overseas bases, and our allies around the world," Trump added.
The US number one promised to destroy Iran's missiles, destroy its missile industry, and destroy its navy, while reaffirming that Iran should not have nuclear weapons.
"We will destroy their missiles and lay their missile industry to the ground. It will be completely, once again, destroyed," he said.
He also stressed that Washington would crack down on proxy groups that he said threatened regional stability. He also alluded to the use of IEDs or roadside bombs which he said had injured and killed thousands of people, including Americans.
Trump also reiterated that Iran must not have nuclear weapons.
Referring to a number of attacks, including the takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979, the bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983 which killed 241 Americans, as well as the attack on the USS Cole in 2000, Trump said that "Iranian forces have killed and injured hundreds of American military personnel in Iraq".
"Proksi rezim terus melancarkan serangan tak terhitung terhadap pasukan Amerika yang ditempatkan di Timur Tengah dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, serta terhadap kapal angkatan laut dan kapal komersial AS di jalur pelayaran internasional," katanya.
"This is mass terror," Trump said. "We will not tolerate it any longer. From Lebanon to Yemen and from Syria to Iraq, the regime has armed, trained and funded terrorist militias."
Trump called Iran the "number one state sponsor of terrorism in the world," and said that recently the regime "killed tens of thousands of its own citizens in the streets as they protested."
Trump said that for a long time the US policy, especially under his administration, was that "this terrorist regime must not have nuclear weapons."
