JAKARTA - The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh launched the Nusantara Taste Ambassador Certificate initiative, a tangible step in supporting Indonesia's gastrodiplomacy efforts in Cambodia, which is expected to motivate Indonesian restaurants to popularize Indonesian cuisine.
The launch of the Nusantara Taste Ambassador Certificate was carried out directly by the Indonesian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia Santo Darmosumarto, which was attended by a number of ambassadors of friendly countries and Cambodian businessmen in Phnom Penh on Thursday.
"The Nusantara Taste Ambassador is a recognition of the important role of Indonesian restaurants in introducing Indonesian cuisine to local communities and foreign citizens in Cambodia," said Ambassador Santo in his remarks, launching the statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Sunday (22/2).
This certificate is given to Indonesian restaurants in Cambodia that have played a role in promoting the richness of Indonesian cuisine through Indonesian dishes with authentic tastes and recipes.
Continuously, Indonesian cuisine can strengthen the closeness of culture and bilateral relations between Indonesia and Cambodia broadly.
The owner of the Resto Somatera restaurant, Markus Dwinanta, became the first recipient of the Nusantara Taste Ambassador certificate. Resto Somatera was chosen as the Nusantara Taste Ambassador for its role in introducing typical dishes from various regions in Indonesia to the Cambodian community for almost 17 years.
Resto Somatera is also known to empower Cambodian youth through cooking training and various Indonesian recipes. In fact, there are four former employees of Resto Somatera who have opened their own culinary businesses.
"This initiative is actually also a support for the steps of the Cambodian government which is actively promoting the halal culinary industry in Cambodia, along with the growing number of Muslim tourists visiting this country," explained Ambassador Santo.
The issuance of the Nusantara Taste Ambassador certificate is expected not only to serve as an appreciation, but also to be a motivation for Indonesian restaurants to support the culinary richness of Nusantara to be increasingly known and accepted positively by the Cambodian people.
In the future, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh will curate a list of recommendations for Indonesian restaurants with authentic tastes and recipes that can be used as a guide by all parties to find the Indonesian restaurant of choice when in Cambodia.
It is known that currently there are around 400 Indonesian typical restaurants spread across various provinces in the Land of the Khmer.
