JAYAPURA - A joint SAR team evacuated the body of Rafles Fonataba Waromi (22) who was buried in a landslide while working at an illegal gold mining location in Batu Putih, Jayapura.

Head of the Jayapura SAR Office, Anton Sucipto, said the evacuation of the victim's body was successfully carried out on Tuesday night and was then taken to Bhayangkara Jayapura Hospital.

The victim was reportedly hit by a landslide of soil material while carrying out gold mining activities in the area on Sunday, February 15.

"The victim did not have time to save himself until he was buried by the landslide," he explained, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, February 18.

Search efforts were carried out by the family and local community, but the victim has not been found so the incident was reported to the Jayapura Search and Rescue Office in Sentani.

The victim's colleagues with the joint SAR team finally found the victim on Tuesday afternoon at around 17.57 WIT. The evacuation process lasted until 21.15 WIT due to the condition of the terrain which was quite dangerous.

Anton explained that the mining location was located in a hilly area with soil material that was prone to landslides so that the team had to work extra carefully during the evacuation process.

The Batu Putih area in the South Jayapura District is known as an illegal gold mining area that can only be reached by walking through a footpath.
