JAKARTA - The Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) is moving quickly to reach the case of alleged child trafficking in Tamansari, West Jakarta. This case involves two toddlers aged 3 and 5 years and two babies aged 5-6 months who are suspected of being victims of a human trafficking network.
Deputy Chairman of the LPSK, Antonius P S Wibowo, said that since last week his party had coordinated with the Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police and the West Jakarta Metro Police to ensure that the rights of the victims were fulfilled.
"LPSK proactively communicates with the police to ensure that victims receive comprehensive protection," he said in a written statement received, Monday, February 16.
A number of child victims have now been secured and placed in orphanages to receive temporary care and rehabilitation services. LPSK has also established communication with the caregiver of one of the victims as well as the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).
Meanwhile, the police have secured 10 adults suspected of being involved in the child trafficking network. Legal proceedings against the perpetrators are currently underway.
Based on the LPSK's records, this case began on October 31, 2025 when the biological mother of one of the victims picked up her child from a relative's house. However, until November 21, 2025, the child did not return.
After being traced, the victim was allegedly sold in a chain with an increasing transaction value, ranging from Rp. 17.5 million to Rp. 85 million. The child was finally found in the Jambi area with three other children who were also suspected of being victims of human trafficking.
This case is charged with Law Number 21 of 2007 concerning the Eradication of Human Trafficking (TPPO). In the regulation, the child trafficking perpetrator is threatened with a minimum of three years in prison and a maximum of 15 years, as well as a fine of Rp. 120 million to Rp. 600 million.
Antonius emphasized that the state must ensure the full recovery of victims, including psychological, psychosocial, medical assistance, restitution, and accompaniment during the judicial process.
He also touched on the regulation of seizure as a guarantee of restitution in Article 179 of the new Criminal Procedure Code, which is expected to increase the number of restitution for victims of TPPO. In 2024, restitution for TPPO victims was recorded at Rp. 968.06 million.
LPSK assessed that this case was a serious alarm for strengthening the child protection system and early detection of human trafficking. The role of families, communities, and local governments is considered crucial to prevent children from becoming victims again.11
"Strict enforcement of the law must go hand in hand with a strong social protection system so that children can grow and develop optimally," said Antonius.
