JAKARTA - The United Nations (UN) is ready to accommodate the return of more residents to the Gaza Strip every day than the quota set by Israel.
"And if Israel allows more residents to enter or leave [Gaza], the United Nations is ready to facilitate it," said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, quoted by Sputnik, Thursday, February 12.
He reiterated that the UN would make every effort to accommodate more people entering Gaza.
"Once again, restrictions and procedures are imposed by Israel, by Egypt. We want to see more people coming in and out without obstacles, just as we are all allowed to enter and leave places freely. And more people are allowed to get medical help outside Gaza that they desperately need," he said.
The Rafah crossing on the Egyptian-Gaza border reopened on February 2. Under the prevailing arrangements, up to 150 Gazans are allowed to leave the area each day, while 50 residents are allowed to enter from Egypt after going through the prescribed procedures.
The management of the crossing is carried out by the European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) in cooperation with Egyptian authorities and through security coordination with Israel.
Every day, Egypt submits a list of 50 Gazans who want to enter the territory to get Israeli security approval, while EUBAM submits a list of 150 people who will leave with their final destination.
Before the war in Gaza, Rafah was the only crossing in the Palestinian territories that was not directly controlled by Israel.
This border gate plays an important role for humanitarian assistance, evacuation of injured victims, and international vital supplies.
