Mataram - The Mataram City Government (Pemkot), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, will soon have a central Public Cemetery (TPU) and will be the largest cemetery in the region.
Head of the Mataram City Housing and Residential Area Service (Disperkim) M Nazarudin Fikri said the project will be the largest TPU in NTB with a land area of more than 1.5 hectares.
"The construction of the cemetery is an answer to the full start of several public cemeteries in the heart of the city, such as the Karang Medain Cemetery," he said in Mataram, Monday, quoted by Antara.
According to him, the construction of the central TPU has now reached 80 percent and 20 percent is land arrangement work with a total arrangement budget of around Rp700 million.
Before it was inaugurated, his party was waiting for directions and corrections from the Mayor of Mataram, what needed to be improved or added. After that, the completion stage was carried out.
If there are no obstacles, he said, the largest TPU is targeted to start functioning in 2026.
"Its operation is very dependent on the decision of the Mayor of Mataram. But we hope that this year it can be used by the community," he said.
He said the new cemetery area was not just empty land, but his party had designed the area with a representative arrangement, including a large parking area and an iconic gate.
Meanwhile, regarding the land purchase scheme, he said the process was carried out gradually using the Mataram City APBD.
According to him, the TPU land will later be centralized because of its status as a modern TPU. The Mataram City Government is currently preparing regulations in the form of Regional Regulations (Perda) and the Mayor's Regulation (Perwal) to regulate funeral procedures.
"There will be further discussions with the Wali about the rules of use of the TPU," he said.
Responding to a question about whether it was intended for Mataram citizens with KTP in general or there were special criteria, Nazarudin said the TPU was prepared as a solution because the old tombs were full.
In addition to focusing on the central TPU, he said, the Mataram City Government is also very concerned about funerals at the village level. Therefore, several land expansion of cemeteries have been completed by purchasing land, such as in Gomong, Babakan, Bertais, and Pandansalas.
