PT Industri Karet Deli (IKD), manufacturer of Swallow and Deli Tire brands, officially operates a 10 MWp rooftop Solar Power Plant (PLTS) at its production facility in Medan City. This installation is the largest rooftop solar power system in the industrial sector of North Sumatra Province to date.

This strategic step marks a significant shift in the pattern of industrial manufacturing energy consumption in the Sumatra region, by switching dependence on fossil energy to renewable energy sources (EBT) independently.

The Rooftop PLTS developed together with PT Greenroof Energy Indonesia is projected to be able to generate 12-13 GWh of electricity per year. All the power generated is absorbed directly to support the production activities of export and domestic tires at the Medan plant.

Director of PT Industri Karet Deli, Darkiat Tjangnaka, stated that this project is not merely a technical installation, but a strategic investment to increase the company's energy efficiency and resilience.

"This is a milestone in energy transformation for IKD. The direct use of solar energy strengthens our energy cost structure and operational competitiveness. We are also studying the expansion of PLTS capacity opportunities as energy needs and technology progress," said Darkiat.

This large-scale project attracted international attention, attended by representatives of the Medan City Government, the Deputy Ambassador of Norway, the Head of Economic Affairs of the Dutch Embassy, as well as representatives of the European Union. The presence of these diplomats confirms IKD's position in the global supply chain which increasingly demands high sustainability standards.

Assistant to the Mayor for Economy and Development of Medan City, Citra Effendy Capah, called this initiative an important precedent for the industrial ecosystem in Medan. He encouraged other industrial actors to follow IKD's steps in integrating clean energy to increase regional competitiveness.

As one of the major customers with a 22.86 MW installed capacity, IKD's move received support from PT PLN (Persero). Manager of PLN UP3 Medan Utara, Hiro Pingkir Pardede, assessed the integration of this Rooftop PLTS in line with the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). PLN also encourages the expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in the industrial area as a further decarbonization step.

The project is financed and developed through an international consortium between Norfund (Norwegian Government investment agency) and Climate Fund Managers (EU support), which confirms the global standard of technical and safety standards on this project.
