KUDUS - A joint team is handling a breached embankment in the Nglangak River in Pladen Village, Jekulo District, Kudus, Central Java.
According to the Head of the Jekulo Sub-district, Adji Setiawan, the breach of the embankment occurred at 04.00 WIB, Thursday, February 5, after being hit by heavy rain overnight.
The age of the embankment, he said, was enough so that when the water discharge was high it was unable to hold. The embankment broke down causing flooding in five neighborhood units (RT) spread over two residential units (RW).
The height of the flood varies between 10-15 centimeters, while the affected houses reach 250 units.
Jekulo Police Chief AKP Danail Arifin said that after receiving information that the embankment had collapsed, his staff were deployed to the location to help repair the embankment temporarily with plastic sacks filled with excavated materials.
River water discharge, he said, has temporarily started to decrease, but emergency embankment handling needs to be carried out immediately so that water does not enter the residents' settlements.
A number of village residents whose houses were flooded had to clean their houses from mud after the puddles inside the house began to recede.
Some other residents tried to dispose of stagnant water in the house using a pump to be disposed of in low-lying areas.
Munir, one of the residents affected by the flood, admitted that the flood in the house reached the knees of adults which occurred at 04.00 WIB.
Because his house is still submerged, he uses a water pump to quickly recede.
"Today's (5/2) flood is the worst, because the embankment has been breached, while the previous flood was only because the Nglangak River water was clear, so it quickly receded," he said.
