JAKARTA - The government is finalizing a new presidential regulation (Perpres) that will integrate national policies for household waste and marine waste management, as an effort to strengthen the circular economy-based management system.
Deputy for Coordination of Affordability and Food Security of the Coordinating Ministry for Food and Agriculture Nani Hendiarti said the presidential decree would combine Presidential Decree Number 97 of 2017 on National Policies and Strategies for Household Waste Management and Household Waste and Waste Management. Presidential Decree Number 83 of 2018 on Marine Waste Management.
"We are finalizing the integration of these two presidential decrees into one national policy. We hope to complete it this semester, because we think it is very important," said Nani as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, February 3.
He explained that this step was in line with the President's direction which placed waste management as a national priority.
Nani explained that the regulation will also include waste prevention in rivers because according to him it is one of the main strategies because it has proven to be the most effective in holding the rate of plastic waste to the sea.
Therefore, the government is expanding cross-ministry cooperation, local governments, and international partners to accelerate the installation of waste interception systems in major rivers.
Nani stated that the government together with the Dutch non-profit organization, The Ocean Cleanup, had also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation to expand the river cleaning initiative with interceptor ship technology.
In addition to policy integration, Nani said the government was also accelerating the implementation of Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025 concerning Waste Processing into Energy (waste to energy) as part of the transformation towards a sustainable waste management system.
He emphasized that the government's commitment in handling waste management was carried out comprehensively, ranging from encouraging changes in public behavior, strengthening upstream and downstream management systems to support the circular economy, to ensuring that the collected waste can be reused so that it does not pollute the environment again.
