JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) / Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) has confirmed that it will investigate the emergence of yellow smoke from a chemical factory in Cilegon, Banten to determine whether further handling is needed.
"KLH/BPLH has assigned a team of pedals and supervisors from the Deputy for Pollution Control and Environmental Damage (PPKL) and the Deputy for Gakkum. This step is taken to find out the chronology and the cause of the leak," said Deputy for Pollution Control and Environmental Damage (PPKL) KLH/BPLH Rasio Ridho Sani as reported by ANTARA, Monday, February 2.
The team from KLH/BPLH, said Ridho, has been deployed to the factory location in the Cikuasa industrial area in Cilegon.
Previously, a video circulated on social media regarding the yellow smoke that appeared at the location of a chemical storage plant in the Cilegon area on Saturday (31/1). The incident caused panic among residents in Gerem Village.
Several residents admitted that the yellow smoke caused symptoms of dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
Meanwhile, several parties have also conducted inspections, including Cilegon Mayor Robinsar who visited the location to conduct an inspection. According to him, no gas came out and the smoke was not from a pipe leak or caused by a leak from a chemical storage tank.
In his statement, the Cilegon City Government ensured that the surrounding environment was safe after the incident of the smoke plume. However, he said that his party had asked the company to be more careful in carrying out its activities.
Previously, Deputy Chairman of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Chusnunia Chalim, urged the government to investigate the alleged gas leak at the chemical storage plant.
According to him, even though the Cilegon Police and City Government have stated that the smoke was not caused by a tank or pipe leak, but rather due to the pipe cleaning process, further explanation needs to be made.
