JAKARTA - Sub-Directorate V of the Riau Islands Police's Criminal Investigation Unit is investigating a fake banking website scam that has caused a businessman in Batam City to lose billions of rupiah.

"We received a police report last week," said Head of Sub-Section V Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the North Sumatra Regional Police, AKBP Arif Mahari, quoted from ANTARA, Sunday, February 1, 2026.

AKBP Arif Mahari also said that the reporter was an entrepreneur in Batam City. He suffered losses of billions of rupiah after making transactions on a fake website link.

He explained that the victim accessed a banking link which turned out to be a fake banking website scam.

"This victim accessed the banking link that he usually uses, it turns out that the website is fake, just like the writing," he said.

He gave an example, the link to the banking website was one of the private banks. The victim thought the link was the official website because it was in the top search list on google.

"So I think it's an official website, because it's on the top of the google search list," he said.

Then, the victim made a transaction through the link and entered his data (ID and password) without suspecting that the link was a fake website scam.

After a while, the victim realized there was a suspicious transaction in his account. Until billions of money in his account were drained.

Investigators have received a police report from the victim, and are investigating. From the results of the search, the perpetrator immediately broke it into a number of accounts.

"We have coordinated this case with the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) so that the top sites in the google search need to be verified further," he said.

Currently, investigators are still asking for information from the reporter as an initial step in deepening the case. In addition to illegal access violations, there is also negligence from customers who are not thorough when accessing banking links.

Therefore, Arif appealed to the public to be more careful when accessing links in internet searches. Not all top links are official links, they can be fraudulent links.

"Make sure before accessing the link, whether it is official or not before making a transaction," said Arif.
