JAKARTA - President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday said Ukraine was ready to stop attacking Russian energy infrastructure, provided Moscow also adhered to a cessation of attacks proposed by US President Donald Trump.
In a conversation with reporters reported by Ukrainian media, President Zelensky said that the topic of an energy ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow was raised during the trilateral peace talks in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, on January 23-24 by the Americans and was a personal initiative of President Trump.
"If Russia hears signals from the Americans in the same way we hear them, then we will definitely get results and be able to evaluate them," President Zelensky told reporters, according to the state news agency Ukrinform, as reported by Anadolu (30/1).
Noting that there was no direct dialogue or agreement between Russia and Ukraine on the topic, President Zelensky said his country would "maintain the same attitude towards such steps."
"If Russia does not attack our energy infrastructure, we will not attack their energy infrastructure. I think this is the answer expected by the negotiating mediator, namely the United States," he explained, while expressing Ukraine's readiness for de-escalation measures.
The Ukrainian president's statement came after President Trump said in a cabinet meeting on Thursday that he "personally asked" Russian President Vladimir Putin not to fire at Kyiv and various cities in Ukraine amid "very cold" weather conditions.
President Zelensky thanked his US counterpart in a subsequent statement on social media X, saying the topic was discussed in the UAE and they "hope the deal will be implemented."
In further remarks on the matter, President Zelensky said in a video address late Monday that "the situation tonight and over the next few days" would "show how things really are."
Russian authorities have not commented on the initiative.
