Banyumas Regency Environmental Service (DLH) in Central Java appeals to the public to temporarily limit the use of river water following a decline in water quality. This appeal followed flash floods from a number of rivers upstream on the slopes of Mount Slamet on Saturday, January 24.

Head of the Banyumas Regency DLH Widodo Sugiri said the results of monitoring showed that a number of pollutant parameters were far above the standard water quality threshold, so that river water was not yet suitable for optimal use, especially for fisheries, livestock, and activities that come into direct contact with water.

"Based on water quality studies, several parameters such as turbidity, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) are above the threshold. For the time being, we appeal to the public not to fully utilize river water and limit its use," he said in Purwokerto, Banyumas, Wednesday, quoted by Antara.

Furthermore, he said the results of monitoring DLH through the Ministry of Environment's Online Water Quality Monitoring (Onlimo) system showed that the most affected condition was in the middle Pelus River.

According to him, at the KLHK253 Onlimo Station in Bendung Pandak Raden, Pandak Village, Baturraden District, the Total Suspended Solid (TSS) value was recorded at 427.11 milligrams per liter on January 25, 2026, far exceeding the quality standard of Class II water of 50 milligrams per liter.

In addition, the BOD was monitored at 356.93 milligrams per liter and COD at 613.62 milligrams per liter, both far above the quality standard for Class II water, which is 3 milligrams per liter for BOD and 25 milligrams per liter for COD.

He said the high value of the parameter was influenced by the mud material from the slopes of Mount Slamet which was carried by the river flow, causing the turbidity to increase and sedimentation in several points.

"This condition has an impact on agriculture, fisheries, and residential areas along the river. We ask the public to be more vigilant," he said.

According to him, the results of monitoring the quality of clean water have been submitted to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Banyumas Regency to be effectively and uniformly disseminated to the public.

Regarding clean water services, he said the drinking water district company could still process water through the existing system, but people who take water directly from rivers or springs near rivers are asked to be careful because the potential for muddy water to enter is still high.

"We will continue to monitor water quality periodically and coordinate with related agencies to determine the next steps according to the development of environmental conditions," said Sugiri.
