JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump warned Iran not to resume its nuclear program, stressing that violations of the ban could trigger military action.

Trump said Washington would ensure Tehran's current position on its nuclear activities and would not tolerate any attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

"It's a tough place. It's a place we attacked very hard (last June)... ending the nuclear program," Trump said in an interview with CNBC on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, January 22.

He said the attack was carried out by a B-2 stealth bomber.

Trump added that Iran would have had nuclear weapons if the attack had not been carried out.

"They'll have nuclear weapons a long time, maybe a month after we attack, if we don't hit them. And we hit them hard, with the B-2," he said.

He said the US government would now monitor Tehran's next steps.

"We will find out where their position is now and what they will do about nuclear. They should not do nuclear. One thing I always emphasize, they should not do nuclear," he said.

Trump also claimed Iran halted plans to execute protesters after he issued a military warning last week.

"They're going to hang 837 people on Thursday," Trump said. "I told them, 'You can't do that.'"

Waves of protests erupted in Iran on December 28 amid deteriorating economic conditions, especially the plummeting value of the national currency and soaring inflation.

Demonstrations spread to various cities and triggered clashes with security forces.

Iranian officials have accused the United States and Israel of backing what they call "armed rioters" who have carried out a number of attacks on public places across the country. The allegations were denied by Washington.

Trump had previously repeatedly threatened to "hit hard" if protesters were killed, but later praised Tehran for scrapping hundreds of scheduled executions.

Trump hopes the United States does not need to take additional military action against Iran. "We hope there will be no further action," he said.
