JAKARTA - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia would continue to use all available means to liquidate its frozen assets.
"We will continue to fight in any condition and will defend our rights. We will continue to use all possible means to ensure that these assets can be liquidated," Peskov told reporters, quoted by Sputnik, Thursday, January 22.
Previously on Wednesday (21/5), Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia was ready to allocate funds of up to 1 billion US dollars (around Rp16.9 trillion) from previously frozen assets to the Peace Council.
Peskov said the allocation of 1 billion US dollars from the assets frozen for the Peace Council would require a number of actions from the United States. He said the legal details still needed to be clarified.
Russia's readiness to allocate the funds for humanitarian purposes within the framework of the Peace Council does not mean that Moscow has lost hope of recovering its frozen assets, Peskov added.
The Kremlin spokesman also said Putin would discuss the issue with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during their meeting on Thursday.
As reported, the European Union Council on December 12 decided to impose a temporary ban on any transfer of assets belonging to the Russian central bank that were frozen within the bloc back to Russia, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
"This decision was taken as an urgent measure to limit losses to the EU economy," the European Council said in a statement.
The policy prohibits any transfer of assets or reserves of the Russian central bank directly or indirectly, as well as transactions involving "any legal person, entity, or institution acting on behalf of or at the direction of the Russian central bank," the statement said.
The move will freeze assets estimated to be worth around 210 billion euros (1 euro = Rp19,490). Most of the assets, which are worth around 190 billion euros, are held at Euroclear, a financial services company based in Belgium.
