JAKARTA - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is discussing implementing a work-from-home (WFH) policy if flooding hits Jakarta again on weekdays. He will also implement distance learning (PJJ) for students whose schools are affected by the flooding.

"If it happens again, and if there are indications of flooding like this on weekdays, I will decide to implement work-from-home, especially for our students," Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday, January 21.

Pramono stated that the WFH decision was not taken for the flooding that occurred last weekend because it coincided with a long holiday. This situation was deemed not to have disrupted office or school activities.

According to Pramono, the heavy rainfall that occurred last Saturday and Sunday did not require a WFH policy because public activity was indeed reduced.

"Because yesterday, when it rained on Saturday and Sunday, it happened to be a long holiday. So there was no need for work-from-home," he said.

On that occasion, Pramono also touched on the mitigation measures taken by the Jakarta Provincial Government through weather modification operations (OMC). He stated that this was the first time the OMC budget had been allocated for a full month, significantly longer than previous implementations.

"Actually, this is the first time that a weather modification operation has been budgeted for a full month. Usually, it's only one, two, or three days," Pramono said.

He explained that this measure was taken because the weather conditions were considered increasingly extreme, not only in Jakarta but also along the North Coast of Java, which was still experiencing flooding.

"Why did we do this? We didn't want to have to worry about anything, because the weather is really extreme. Almost all of the North Coast of Java is still flooded today," he explained.

Pramono assessed that one factor that contributed to the relatively rapid flooding in Jakarta was the readiness of the pumping infrastructure. However, he acknowledged that inundation remains unavoidable if rainfall exceeds a certain threshold.

He emphasized that the Jakarta Provincial Government will not reduce the budget for extreme weather management efforts, including river normalization and the procurement of new pumps. Pramono said that this preparedness is key to facing future flood risks.

"So, regarding the mitigation of severe weather and the normalization of rivers, whether it's the Ciliwung or Krukut, as well as the purchase of several new pumps, I emphasize that there will be no reduction. Because Jakarta must be well prepared in handling this severe weather," he added.
