JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo is preparing emergency steps to anticipate the impact of extreme weather in the Capital City. Pramono emphasized that he would issue a call to work from home (Work From Home/WFH) and Distance Learning (PJJ) if the indication of a major flood reappears on weekdays.

This policy was taken in light of the high rainfall last weekend which triggered puddles at a number of points. Pramono was grateful that the extreme weather occurred during the holidays, so that the mobility of residents was not too disturbed.

"If it will happen again, and hopefully not. Yesterday when the rainfall on Saturday-Sunday happened to be a long holiday, so it does not require WFH," said Pramono at the Jakarta City Hall, Wednesday, January 21.

However, he ensured that he would not hesitate to make a similar decision if an emergency situation occurred on the effective day. "But if there is an indication like that (floods) and on a regular day, I will decide to do WFH (and PJJ)," he said.

Maximize Pumps and Weather Modification

Even though it has prepared the WFH option, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government still prioritizes preventive steps in the field. Pramono has instructed all levels to maximize the operation of water pumps throughout Jakarta.

According to him, the existence of adequate pump facilities is the reason why the puddles in Jakarta are relatively faster to recede than other areas along the North Coast (Pantura) of Java which is currently also affected by flooding.

"Why can it recede quickly in Jakarta? Because the pump facilities are enough to do that. However, if the rainfall is above 250 mm, there will definitely be puddles," he explained.

Evaluation of Weather Modification Operations (OMC)

Regarding the puddles that appeared on Saturday, January 17, Pramono explained that this was caused by rainfall that exceeded predictions. On that day, rainfall was recorded at 260 mm to 280 mm.

Because the initial forecast showed low intensity, the Weather Modification Operation (OMC) was not carried out on Saturday. Evaluating this, Pramono immediately ordered the OMC to be carried out massively the next day.

"Sunday (18/1) I asked for three flights (OMC) to be carried out. If it is not done, I am afraid that more areas of Jakarta will be flooded," said Pramono.

He claimed that the weather intervention on Sunday was proven effective in alleviating the impact of flooding in various vulnerable points in Jakarta.
