Flood Smothered Kelapa Gading, 201 Warga Pegangsaan Dua Evacuated

JAKARTA - Flooding submerged a number of areas in Kelapa Gading District, North Jakarta, due to high rainfall and poor water flow. The flooding disrupted the activities of residents, even some of them were forced to leave their homes for safety.

In RW 03 Pegangsaan Dua Village, as many as 201 residents had to evacuate to safer places because the condition of their houses did not allow them to live. Affected residents were evacuated to several temporary evacuation points in the surrounding area.

"The refugees are spread across several mosques, mushallas and residents' power plants that have been used as temporary shelters," said the Head of Pegangsaan Dua Sarmudi in Jakarta, Sunday, January 18.

He explained that the evacuation locations include the At-Taqwa Mosque RT 003/03, the Al-Husnah Mosque RT 004/03, the FBR substation and the Darul Mukmin Mushola RT 005/03, as well as the Jami Albahriyah Mosque RT 006/03.

"Meanwhile, RT 007/03 is recorded as having no refugees," he said.

Of the total recorded refugees, there are vulnerable groups that are of special concern, namely 19 elderly people and 37 toddlers and children. They are in the refugee location with the head of the family, housewife, and other adult residents with limited facilities.

The village government together with related elements, including the BPBD, the sub-district, and the North Jakarta Administration Social Service Department, continue to coordinate to ensure that the safety and basic needs of affected residents are met.

He said the safety of residents was the top priority and currently we are continuing to conduct data collection, monitoring conditions at the evacuation site.

"We are also coordinating with relevant parties so that assistance can be immediately distributed according to needs," he said.

Furthermore, he mentioned a number of urgent needs required by refugees, including adult and toddler diapers, blankets, baby milk, perlak, biscuits, as well as hygiene and health supplies such as soap and eucalyptus oil.

"We hope for support from various parties so that the needs of refugees, especially the elderly and children, can be met immediately. The spirit of mutual cooperation is a strength in situations like this," he said.
