KUDUS - Residents of Golantepus Village, Mejobo District, Kudus Regency, Central Java, worked together to handle the breached river embankment and overflowed at several points to prevent the flood from spreading further.

The head of Golantepus Village, Nuur Taufiq, said the first breach of the embankment occurred on Thursday (15/1) at around 09.00 WIB due to the high discharge of the river caused by heavy rainfall.

"Alhamdulillah, thanks to the support of the people who immediately moved quickly to work together, the breached embankments can be handled. There are a total of eight points of breached embankments, both small and medium in size," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, January 16.

However, the embankment that had been handled was again damaged due to the increasing water discharge. In addition to being broken, the river water also overflowed in a number of locations so that the flood in the residential area of residents had not receded.

"Today the river water discharge has risen again and caused runoff at several points. Residents are again working together to strengthen the embankment so that there will be no subsequent breaches or runoff," he said.

The embankment collapsed and debris spread across several rivers that crossed Golantepus Village, including the Piji River, the Dawe River, the Poceho River, the Prisen River, and the Mrisi River.

The eight locations of the breached embankments are in several RT and RW areas, including RT 1 RW 2, RT 2 RW 1, RT 4 RW 1, and RT 5 RW 1.

As a result of the incident, around 30 neighborhood units (RT) were affected by flooding. It is estimated that more than 4,500 residents were affected, with an estimated 2,500 flooded houses.

Water levels vary, averaging around 50 centimeters (Cm), while on some roads it reaches almost one meter so that it cannot be passed by four-wheeled vehicles.

Nuur Taufiq added that the current river conditions were also exacerbated by dredging and the lack of optimal height of embankments in a number of locations.

Meanwhile, the handling carried out by residents, he said, is still temporary.

"Some of the embankments are permanent, but the height is still lacking. When the water discharge rises a little, it immediately overflows and has an impact on settlements," he said.

He hopes that there will be permanent handling from the local government, especially the elevation and repair of river embankments.

He also mentioned that previously the Kudus Regent together with the Head of the PUPR Office had promised to complete the embankment and water channel infrastructure in RW 2 in 2027.

"Our hope is that this promise can be realized, because the Golantepus area is quite prone to flooding if the rainfall is high," he said.
