JAKARTA - Turkey opposes the threat of violence from foreign forces against Iran amid deadly protests, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said while speaking to reporters in Istanbul on Thursday.
"Our diplomatic efforts for Iran will continue; our priority is to prevent destabilization," he said, launching Anadolu (15/1).
"Iran must solve its own authentic problems. We are against any intervention," he said.
Stating that he had urged his Iranian counterparts to resolve problems with regional countries, Foreign Minister Fidan said: "Iran must resolve its problems related to global nuclear issues through diplomacy without missing any opportunity, so that certain structural problems that cause economic difficulties can be eliminated."
Previously, a senior Iranian official speaking to Reuters on Wednesday warned that Iran would attack US military bases in regional countries if the US attacked.
"Tehran has told regional countries, from Saudi Arabia and the UAE to Turkey, that US bases in those countries will be attacked if the US targets Iran, asking these countries to prevent Washington from attacking Iran," the official told Reuters.
Turkey maintains close ties with both sides potentially involved in the conflict and is one of Israel's most vocal opponents of genocide, joining the US in supporting action against Tehran.
Foreign Minister Fidan underlined that when a country is under international isolation, the provision of certain economic services is limited.
"Iran has a large population and a dynamic society. This country has a well-informed population with a very strong desire to live and participate in social life. When you deprive a certain opportunity from such a society, problems like this will arise," he explained.
"What is confusing here is that the difficulties faced by the people due to economic difficulties and other difficulties can appear as an ideological rebellion against the regime; in fact, this is a gray area," he continued.
"If you look more closely, there is no situation that will arouse the desire of some countries hostile to Iran abroad, in terms of hostility to the regime. However, the economic difficulties caused by the existing policies and the inability to overcome them do pose a serious problem. We do not want to see any intervention here, but if you look at (US President Donald) Trump's policies, we have not seen a strong preference so far for the use of ground forces," he said.
