JAKARTA - Viral police in Malaysia slapped a motorcyclist at one of the gas stations in Johor. The traffic police did not wear uniforms in carrying out their actions to civilians.
"The police involved - a policeman aged between 25 and 30 years old - was on leave at the time but has been called back to work and assigned to traffic operations in the area," Johor Police Chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said at a press conference quoted from The Straits Times, Wednesday, January 14.
Ab Rahaman explained that the police who were recorded in the viral video slapping the motorcyclist acted during a traffic operation to crack down on illegal racing activities.
According to him, based on the initial internal investigation, there was evidence that the 21-year-old motorcyclist was suspected of trying to escape during the operation so that the police members carried out the beating.
Ab Rahaman said the police were still active duty after the incident and had not been ordered to take a temporary leave, in accordance with the applicable police procedures.
"However, he has been withdrawn from operations for a while," he added.
According to the police, the victim was detained for questioning at the gas station before being taken to the North Johor Bahru district police headquarters for further examination of his motorcycle.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code on intentional cruelty, which can be punished with imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, if found guilty.
