JAKARTA - Two separate snow avalanches claimed the lives of three skiers off-piste in the French Alps on Saturday, January 10 local time.
Citing AFP, Sunday, January 11, the resort office at the scene of the incident said two French skiers off the official trail were killed after being buried in a snow avalanche in Val-d'Isere.
Colleagues of the ski group of the two victims had sounded the alarm during the incident, but the rescue team that came to the scene could not save them.
The two victims were said to be equipped with an avalanche detection device buried under 2.5 meters of snow. The point of finding the two victims was thanks to the mobile phone they were carrying.
In a separate place, about 60 kilometers away, another avalanche hit two skiers outside the official trail in the Areches-Beaufort resort.
Regional official Jean-Pierre Mirabail said one of the skiers could not be saved, while the second was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.
French weather forecasts have warned of a high risk of avalanches this weekend, with a level four out of five on the European avalanche danger scale.
