JAKARTA - The situation throughout Iran has calmed down a day after widespread public unrest in the country.

"According to observations in the field, the social situation in various cities across the country has been calm," said Iranian police spokesman Saeed Montazer Al-Mahdi, quoted by Iran's IRNA news agency, Friday, January 10.

Al-Mahdi explained that there were only a small number of cases in several cities involving groups he referred to as "terrorists."

The protests in Iran began in late December amid the weakening of the local currency, the Iranian rial. Protesters complained about sharp exchange rate fluctuations and their impact on wholesale and retail prices.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened Iranian authorities amid the protests.

On Friday, Trump said Washington would get involved and would "hit them very hard in their weak points" if protesters were killed during the unrest in Iran.

Earlier on Friday, Iranian media reported that protesters had damaged private and state property in Tehran.

Meanwhile, the mayor of the capital city, Alireza Zakani, spoke about the attacks carried out by participants in the public riots on January 8 against security forces, the burning of buses and fire trucks, and the attack on banks.

Meanwhile, state television reported casualties during the incident, but did not specify which side they came from.

Iran is experiencing a period of high inflation, with the Central Bank setting an annual inflation rate of 38.9 percent.

The unofficial exchange rate of the US dollar, which was around 50,000 rials (about Rp842) before the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in May 2018, has now jumped to around 1.4 million rials (about Rp23,595) on the open market.
