JAKARTA - Police have uncovered the modus operandi of two perpetrators of a motor theft case in the Pondok Kopi area, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta (Jaktim), by pretending to look for a job. Duren Sawit Police Chief Kompol Sutikno said the two men from Bogor were known to have failed to carry out their intention to steal a motorcycle in the Pondok Kopi area because they were caught by victims and residents.
"The modus operandi carried out by them. So, if you are looking for a job on the street, there is none, it must be clear. So, their conclusion is that it is indeed intentional," said Duren Sawit Police Chief Kompol Sutikno.
The case of theft with the charge occurred on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at around 08.30 WIB on Jalan Robusta, RT 05 RW 11, Pondok Kopi Village. Sutikno said the theft was carried out by two perpetrators with initials MN (27) and M (23).
The two intended to steal spontaneously after seeing a Yamaha NMAX motorcycle parked in front of a minimarket with the key still hanging.
"The modus operandi carried out by the perpetrators, namely when walking on Jalan Robusta, they saw a motorcycle parked at a minimarket with the key still attached. From there, there was an intention to take the vehicle," explained Sutikno.
However, the two perpetrators were able to be secured at the scene with the help of local residents. Then, the two perpetrators were taken to the Duren Sawit Police to undergo further examination.
Sutikno said the perpetrator had an excuse for looking for a job while traveling in the area. This reason also became part of the perpetrator's modus operandi to deceive the situation and find opportunities.
"They have the excuse of looking for work, but that is the modus operandi. If you are looking for a job on the street, there is none. That is our conclusion, they are deliberately looking for opportunities," said Sutikno.
He even considered the second reason for the perpetrators to be unreasonable, considering that the incident occurred at night.
"At eight o'clock at night, where do you want to find a job? Look for a job on the highway, right? That's the way," said Sutikno.
Based on the results of the preliminary examination, the two perpetrators were known to be residents of Bogor, West Java. The police also confirmed that the theft was the first time the perpetrators had committed it.
"According to the results of the examination, the person concerned has only committed this crime once," said Sutikno.
For their actions, the two perpetrators were charged with Article 476 of the new Criminal Code (KUHP), related to the crime of theft with a charge, with a threat of imprisonment of more than five years.
"We need to underline, the new Criminal Code has been enacted. The article imposed is Article 476 of the Criminal Code with a threat of imprisonment of more than five years," said Sutikno.
In this case, the police secured evidence in the form of the victim's motorcycle key. After the initial examination was completed, the investigators then conducted an expansion to determine if the perpetrator had ever been involved in a similar crime in another location.
