JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, welcomed the announcement by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, regarding the achievement of national food self-sufficiency by 2025. According to him, the announcement is a fact that the country has not imported rice for the past year.
Abdul Kharis also assessed the achievement as an important step in strengthening Indonesia's food sovereignty and sovereignty.
"Food self-sufficiency is a strategic achievement that should be appreciated. The fact that Indonesia does not import rice throughout 2025 shows the strengthening of the capacity of national food production," Abdul Kharis told reporters, Thursday, January 8.
The head of the agriculture commission also highlighted the government's statement that the government's rice reserves managed by Perum Bulog at the end of 2025 reached more than 3 million tons, the highest in history.
"This condition gives the state a stronger space in maintaining the stability of food supply and prices," said Abdul Kharis.
Even so, he reminded that the achievement of food self-sufficiency does not stop at the aspects of production and reserves. According to Abdul Kharis, the main success indicator still lies in the stability of food prices and the improvement of farmers' welfare.
"The success of self-sufficiency must be felt directly by farmers and the community. The price of grain at the farmer level as well as the affordability of food prices for consumers must continue to be maintained," he said.
In addition to rice, the PKS legislator hopes that efforts to strengthen national food will also be directed at accelerating the self-sufficiency of other strategic commodities, such as corn, soybeans, garlic, and animal protein commodities, in order to reduce import dependence and strengthen food security as a whole.
"Commission IV of the DPR RI will continue to carry out oversight functions so that national food policies run sustainably, data-based, and in favor of farmers," said Abdul Kharis.
Previously, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially announced Indonesia's success in achieving food self-sufficiency.
The announcement was made by Prabowo when he attended a harvest festival in Karawang Regency, West Java, Wednesday, January 7.
"That Indonesia has managed to become a self-sufficient food nation again," said President Prabowo in front of farmers.
