Prabowo-Trump Scheduled to Sign Reciprocal Tariff Agreement

JAKARTA - Secretary of State Prasetyo Hadi said President Prabowo Subianto is ready to sign the final document of the Indonesia-United States reciprocal tariff agreement with US President Donald Trump, after the drafting process of the draft agreement or legal drafting was declared complete.

Prasetyo explained that the current reciprocal tariff negotiations have entered the final stage in the form of checking and drafting the draft agreement by the two countries' negotiation teams, which took place on January 12-19, 2026 in Washington DC, USA.

"According to the schedule, from January 12 to 19, this is the preparation of legal drafting. We hope that the agreements that have been reached can be fully reflected in the document," said Prasetyo in his statement, Tuesday, January 7.

According to him, at this stage, the Indonesian and United States negotiation teams will discuss in more detail the points of the agreement that have been agreed upon previously. The government hopes that the final document of the reciprocal tariff agreement or Agreement on Reciprocal Tariff can be signed by the two heads of state at the end of January 2026.

"Hopefully at the end of the month we can sign it. Of course in this process we continue to try to negotiate for the national interest," said Prasetyo.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the Indonesian and United States negotiating teams had agreed on all the main issues that were the substance of the reciprocal tariff agreement document.

At the end of December 2025, Airlangga also met with the United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, in Washington DC. The meeting was held to finalize negotiations on the import tariff policy of 19 percent imposed by the US Government on Indonesia.

Airlangga explained that from January 12 to 19, 2026, the two countries' negotiating teams will conduct final checks on the draft agreement through the legal scrubbing process and document clean-up, which is targeted to be completed within one week. Furthermore, in the third week of January 2026, the agreement document is targeted to be completed completely.

During the negotiations, Indonesia and the United States have agreed on the substance of a reciprocal trade agreement. Indonesia is committed to opening market access for US products, overcoming non-tariff barriers, and strengthening cooperation in the areas of digital trade, technology, national security, and other commercial cooperation.

Meanwhile, the United States is committed to providing tariff exemptions for a number of Indonesia's flagship export products that are not produced in the US, including palm oil, cocoa, coffee, tea, and other strategic commodities.
