JAKARTA - Indonesia will lead all trials and processes at the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC) throughout this year objectively, inclusively and impartially.

This was said by the Spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, ahead of the appointment of Indonesia as President of the UN Human Rights Council for 2026 which will be held at the Assembly Hall, Palace of Nations, Geneva, Switzerland on January 8.

Yvonne explained, in the organizational meeting held at the UN headquarters, the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, as the UN Human Rights Council knew 2026.

"In its capacity as President of the Human Rights Council, Indonesia will lead the way for the UN Human Rights Council's sessions and processes throughout 2026 in an objective, inclusive and balanced manner," Yvonne explained to VOI.id, Tuesday (6/1).

Yvonne said that the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono was not scheduled to attend the meeting.

Last month, Indonesia was officially chosen as the sole candidate for the President of the UN Human Rights Council in 2026 by the member countries of the Asia-Pacific Group (APG).

"Indonesia will strive to carry out this trust as best as possible, continue to encourage dialogue and cooperation, and work together with all members of the UN Human Rights Council for the promotion and protection of human rights for all," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono last month.

Indonesia itself is currently a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2024-2026. Based on the regional rotation mechanism, the Asia-Pacific Group will take the turn to hold the Presidency of the Human Rights Council in the 20th cycle in 2026, so that the appointment of Indonesia is in line with the regional arrangements that have been agreed upon.

"The election of Indonesia as President of the UN Human Rights Council strengthens the profile of Indonesian human rights diplomacy and at the same time confirms Indonesia's leadership at the international level," explained Yvonne.

"This leadership is summarized in the theme "A Presidency for All". This theme reflects Indonesia's ambition to bring the perspective of developing countries to the international stage in an objective and transparent manner," he continued.

"Indonesia carries the priority of an impartial and transparent leadership, strengthens consensus, and encourages work efficiency within the Human Rights Council," said Yvonne.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs last month said the broad support of the Asia Pacific countries for Indonesia was driven by Indonesia's track record as a bridge builder in human rights issues, its position as an independent developing country that is not affiliated with the interests of certain blocs, and Indonesia's consistent commitment to fighting for humanitarian issues in various parts of the world.
