Ma'ruf Amin Resigns from Chairman of the MUI Watim

JAKARTA - The 13th Vice President (Wapres) Ma'ruf Amin has submitted a resignation letter from the position of Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (Watim MUI) for the period 2025-2030 with consideration of his advanced age.

The resignation letter was addressed to MUI Chairman Anwar Iskandar on November 28, 2025. In the letter, Kiai Ma'ruf said he had long served in MUI.

The positions he has held range from being a member of the Fatwa Commission, General Chairman of MUI, to Chairman of the MUI Advisory Council.

Considering the long time of service, Kiai Ma'ruf said that this is the right time for retirement.

"It's time for me to take a break and resign from the MUI leadership, for the sake of regeneration of duties and responsibilities to other figures who are younger and more competent," wrote Kiai Ma'ruf.

He also wrote an apology to all ranks if during his tenure as Chairman of the MUI Advisory Council there were words and actions that were not pleasing.

When confirmed in Jakarta, Tuesday, Ma'ruf Amin Spokesperson and Head of MUI Information, Communication, and Digital Masduki Baidlowi said that Kiai Ma'ruf's resignation letter would be discussed by the MUI Leadership Council together with the MUI Advisory Council.

"It will still be discussed and involve the MUI Advisory Council," said Masduki.

He said Kiai Ma'rufingin was looking for another service that was not tied to the structural (structural uzlah).

Masduki revealed that Kiai Ma'ruf not only resigned as Chairman of the Wantim MUI, but also resigned as a member of the PKB Shura Council.
